WSET Level 3 Award in Wines

A high-level course in wines, perfect for the serious wine enthusiast or those who need to make informed decisions or recommendations about wine for work.

Course information

This course will develop to a high-level your ability to describe wine accurately, and account in detail for the style, quality and price of wines. Our experienced educators will assist you to develop your analytic tasting abilities through a carefully selected series of 82 wine samples.

Successful students will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin, and will be able to use the associated WSET certified logo.

  • The key factors in the production of wine: location, grape growing, winemaking, maturation and bottling
  • The key characteristics of the principal:
    • still wines of the world
    • sparkling wines of the world
    • fortified wines of the world
  • How to make appropriate wine recommendations
  • How to taste wines using the WSET Level 3 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)
  • Tutored tastings of 82 wines
  • Access to our Online Classroom for the duration of the course including preparation videos

The exam is assessed in two parts, which takes place in the last session of the course:

  • A combined theory paper consisting of 50 multiple-choice questions and four short written answer questions.
  • A tasting paper consisting of a blind tasting of two wines.

A mark of 55% is required in both parts to pass.

This course is open to students who have passed the Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits or the Level 2 Award in Wines. If you do not hold either of these qualification, but have obtained the relevant knowledge and experience, you are eligible to gain entry through successful completion of an online entry test.

If you do not hold the Level 2 Award in Wines but would like a fast-track the the Level 3, you may wish to consider our Level 3 Novice to Professional Course in Wines which combines both qualifications. 

All classes are delivered in English therefore a good level of English is beneficial.

Study options

At WSET School London we have four classroom delivery options available for this course.

Students should note that this is a demanding course and are advised to select a study option that allows them adequate self-study and revision time. A minimum of 60 hours of study time is recommended, in addition to classroom attendance.
